Marriage
Description
For two hundred years now, the plays of Nikolai Gogol have occupied their special place among the masterpieces of world classics. The choice of the play is dictated by the theme of marriage, which is topical at all times. Tufan Imamutdinov, the director of the comedy ‘Marriage’ undertook to tell about such an important event in the life of a modern man. A modern reading of Gogol's play is embodied in the imagery of the performance. The director explores the evolution of human feelings in an information-technological world. The classical plot of the play unfolds in the rhythm of a modern office, which increases the acuteness of the problem. The office is the embodiment of a space where emotions and feelings are washed out, and people immersed in this system of numbers and graphs leave their personal lives in the background, which entails the displacement or even disappearance of living human relationships.
The matchmaker Fyokla Ivanovna's attempts to marry Podkolyosin, a successful clerk, remain futile. Fyoklya has an unmarried businesswoman Agafya Tikhonovna in mind, but the indecisive groom hesitates - he is not entirely sure whether to commit himself to marriage....
The director's reflection on the family structure with the help of Gogol's plot presents the case of Podkolesin as an opportunity to show the human fear of sincere feelings, love and responsibility, the fear of losing a comfortable carefree life.
